Born in 1980 and living in Beijing, Fan Zhang makes ethereal jewellery imbued with a sense of movement. She uses the technique of filigree traditionally used in emperors’ crowns in China, creating rippling forms from silver and gold plated copper that sometimes appear liquid-like, recalling ink paintings, and at other times look as if they have been made from gold thread.
The jewellery professor at China Academy of Fine Art in Beijing draws on her extensive research into ancient goldsmithing crafts in China and Central Asia, as well as the restoration of ancient jewellery in museums. She takes cues from the calligraphy of Wei and Jin dynasties, [add what it looks like and how it shapes her work]. Her works sit lightly on the wearer, moving gently with the body.
