Itto Mishima is a Japanese contemporary
jewellery artist whose work explores the transformation of overlooked values
and beauty into wearable or spatial forms. Born in 1985, Mishima’s practice is rooted in metal engraving techniques but extends to
innovative expressions using diverse materials and methods. His creations often
challenge the boundaries between contemporary jewelry and figurines, reflecting
his ongoing research into how these ambiguous forms can be positioned in modern
contexts.
Mishima’s Kintsugi
series, presented in 2024, draws inspiration from the traditional Asia craft of
repairing ceramics with lacquer and gold. This technique symbolizes the
acceptance of scars and imperfections as part of one’s
individuality, transforming past failures into sources of strength and beauty.
The series features five brooches crafted from silver, K14 gold, and stainless
steel, each designed to resemble repaired ceramic plates. The intricate
patterns, inspired by Ko-Imari and Kutani ware, are laser-engraved onto silver
plates, with cracks meticulously cut and filled with gold to evoke the Kintsugi
aesthetic. The brooches are designed to resemble wall-hung plates, with
fittings that mimic both functional tools and jewel settings, creating a
dialogue between utility and adornment.
Mishima’s artistic
philosophy emphasizes finding new value in the mundane. His earlier works, such
as jewelry made from crushed cans or receipts, highlight the beauty of everyday
objects and the memories they carry. By transforming these ephemeral items into
enduring pieces, he invites viewers to reconsider their perceptions of value
and beauty.
Mishima’s work has
been widely exhibited, including solo shows and group exhibitions, Through his
innovative use of materials and techniques, Itto Mishima continues to push the
boundaries of contemporary jewelry, creating works that resonate with both
cultural heritage and modern sensibilities. His art encourages viewers to
embrace imperfection and find beauty in the unexpected.
