Qiushuang Sun

Summary Works

Qiushuang Sun revels in wrestling with metal, exerting his force over silver and gold to create vessels that celebrate the forging process. The marks of the hammer are left visible, rather than polished away, and the act of shaping and decorating are one. Eschewing finishing tools, the contemporary Chinese artist forges with his hands, which gives his works a sense of freedom of movement, as if human gestures are trapped in time. Spikes and bumps break up the orderliness of the objects, giving them an unusual dynamism.

Born in 1992 in Hebei, China, the artist often draws on historic metalwork references, such as Ding: ancient Chinese tripod cauldrons used for ritual offerings and symbolizing stability, order and power. He reimagines them for today, creating idiosyncratic objects that radiate quiet strength.

Qiushuang Sun is currently studying for a PhD degree in design at the Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University.
